چکیده

Development of counter-rotating streamwise vortices in a rectangular channel with onesided wavy surface has been experimentally quantified using hot-wire anemometry. The wavy surface has fixed amplitude of 3.75 mm. The counter-rotating vortices are pre-set by means of a sawtooth pattern cut at the leading edge of the wavy surface. Variations of the central streamwise velocity Uc with a channel gap H = 35 mm and 50 mm (corresponding to a Reynolds number from 1600 to 4400) change the instability of the flow which can be distinguished from the velocity contours at a certain spanwise plane. The streamwise velocity contours and turbulence intensity for Reynolds number Re = 3100 and H = 35 mm show the disappearance of the mushroom-like vortices prior to turbulence near the second peak of the wavy surface, while for higher Re, this phenomenon occurs earlier. Under certain conditions, for example, for Re = 4400 and H = 50 mm, the splitting of the vortices can also be observed.

Some Canonical Examples of Streamwise Vortex Structure for Rotating Components

Nose cones, turbine blades and bearings have rotating components and represent very practical geometries for which the modal behavior of vortex structures is not completely understood. These three rather different physical cases are being studied. A common theme of competition between modes and vortex types, whether counter-rotating or co-rotating, emerges. The objective of ongoing work is to o...

Direct numerical simulations of roughness-induced transition in supersonic boundary layers

Direct numerical simulations are used to study the laminar to turbulent transition of a Mach 2.9 supersonic flat plate boundary layer flow due to distributed surface roughness. Roughness causes the near-wall fluid to slow down and generates a strong shear layer over the roughness elements. Examination of the mean wall pressure indicates that the roughness surface exerts an upward impulse on the...

The evolution of co-rotating vortices in a canonical boundary layer with inclined jets

The evolution of co-rotating streamwise vortices in a canonical flat plate turbulent boundary layer ~thickness of the boundary layer d0.99525 mm) is studied. The vortices are produced by an array of inclined jets ~diameter D514 mm) with the same orientation ~skew angle b and pitch angle a of 45°!. The focus of the investigation is on the immediate vicinity of the jet exit and downstream locatio...

Optimal wave packets in a boundary layer and initial phases of a turbulent spot

The three-dimensional global optimal dynamics of a flat-plate boundary layer is studied by means of an adjoint-based optimization in a spatial domain of long – but finite – streamwise dimension. The localized optimal initial perturbation is characterized by a pair of streamwise-modulated counter-rotating vortices, tilted upstream, yielding at the optimal time elongated streaks of alternating si...

The centrifugal instability of the boundary-layer flow over a slender rotating cone in an enforced axial free stream

In this study, a new centrifugal instability mode, which dominates within the boundary-layer flow over a slender rotating cone in still fluid, is used for the first time to model the problem within an enforced oncoming axial flow. The resulting problem necessitates an updated similarity solution to represent the basic flow more accurately than previous studies in the literature. The new mean fl...
